The GVMA and the GVMA Foundation honor veterinarians, promising veterinary students, and animals that exemplify the importance of the human-animal bond through a variety of programs.

If you know of a deserving recipient for any of these awards or honors, please contact the GVMA office today to nominate them.

The new GVMA Spotlight shines on Winn Dixie, a high energy Yorkie with a knack for life-saving heroics.

Winn Dixie was recently inducted into the Georgia Animal Hall of Fame. On August 8, the Yorkshire terrier owned by the Rev. Matthew Stewart and his wife Julia and daughter Atalie, alerted his family of a fire in their home. The Stewart family was getting ready for work and school that morning and was unaware of the flames and smoke coming from a water heater that had sparked a fire in the laundry room. Winn Dixie is not known as a barker, but that morning he would not stop, as he got the attention of Matt and lead him to the fire. Matt, who is the pastor at the Lee Street United Methodist Church in Americus, was able to get his family out of the home before the flames engulfed the building. Unfortunately the fire was strong enough that the parsonage in which the Stewart family lived will have to be completely rebuilt. However, the flames claimed no lives that day thanks to Winn Dixie.
