Committees and Task Forces
The GVMA has several committees and task forces working on an ever-changing series of issues. Committees work on ongoing projects or programs while task forces are very dynamic committee organizations that change by the day. They are appointed by the president as a need arises for a well defined mission and time frame.
This is a wonderful way to get involved with the GVMA and to help advance the practice of veterinary medicine in Georgia and we always have volunteer opportunities available. The time commitment required varies but we probably have something that would fit into your schedule. If you are interested in joining one of these groups or if you have an issue you think should be addressed, contact the GVMA office at 800-853-1625.
Committees
Academy for Continuing Education The academy develops and coordinates continuing education activities for Georgia veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and staff. Suggestions for speakers, topics, or locations are always welcome. Chair: Dr. Susan Wynn (770-926-5311)
Budget & Finance Committee The Budget & Finance Committee is charged with the financial health of the association. The committee is familiar with the resources and assets of the association and will make recommendations on expenditures and investments, including developing an annual budget for the Board of Directors to review. Treasurer: Dr. Needham Bateman (770-393-8515)
Leadership Development Committee The Awards Committee, consisting of the three immediate past presidents, is responsible for nominations for President-Elect and the Veterinarian of the Year Award. Suggestions are always welcome from GVMA members. Chair: Dr. Kevin McElwee (770-382-8570)
Peer Review & Ethics Committee This committee is, in simplest terms, a system in which the veterinary profession investigates the appropriateness and quality of the care it renders. It provides an expert and credible system for resolving disagreements that cannot be resolved at an earlier, more informal stage. It is expert because men and women with appropriate credentials help mediate, conduct hearings, review the evidence, and make objective decisions based on the findings. It is voluntary for all parties concerned. Any complaints need to be submitted first in writing to the GVMA, 2814 Spring Road, Suite 217, Atlanta, GA 30339. Chair: Dr. Joe Morrow (706-568-4848)
Membership Committee Chair: Dr. West Hamryka (770-271-7777)
Veterinary Technician Liaison Committee Chair: Dr. Myron Downs (706-354-4002)
Strategic Planning Committee Point of Contact: Dr. Tim Montgomery (770-963-9949)
Wellness Committee The Wellness Committee’s charter is to identify, verify, assist and support veterinarians, family members or staff members who are impaired by reason of their addiction to or abuse of drugs, including alcohol. The committee also serves as an advocate for the impaired person with the family, state board, peers, employers and government enforcement agencies. Confidential assistance is available 24 hours a day by calling Dr. Bill Disque (912-638-9325)
Public Relations Committee This energetic committee works on a variety of programs including the Web site, billboards, and the Animal Hall of Fame Committee. New projects are constantly evolving. Join in! Point of contact: Dr. Kevin Chapman (706-654-1111)
Student Relations Committee In 2001 the GVMA launched a program to encourage interaction between veterinary students and practicing veterinarians. Volunteers are still sought to be mentors to the students. The amount of time needed is flexible, but having an e-mail address is important. Point of contact: Dr. Eric Mueller (706-542-7367)
Legislative Action Committee This group of dedicated individuals acts as a watchdog for legislation affecting all veterinarians in the state of Georgia. They direct GVMA lobbying efforts, which provides financial support for legislators championing our interest. Point of contact: Dr. Ed Mahaffey (706-769-5057)
