The GVMA/UGA Student Surgery Program began in 2016 at Gwinnet Animal Shelter. One Saturday each month six students complete a spay or neuter on a homeless pet at the shelter. The students divide up into teams and oversee every part of the surgery including a physical examination, pre-meds, anesthesia, the procedure, and post-surgical care under the supervisor of a GVMA member veterinarian. Gwinnett Animal Shelter has reduced their annual euthanasia rate from 80% to less than 7% percent over the last 10 years; but, they still took in over 5,500 animals in 2016. The surgery program not only provides hands on experience to veterinary students but also helps more animals to be cleared for adoption.
