COURSE DESCRIPTION

Medical Use of Cannabinoids in Veterinary Medicine: Past, Present and Future

The public attitude towards marijuana are changing. One of the most popular dietary supplements today for use in both pets and their people are medical cannabinoids. However, the use of these products is challenged by the lack of clear evidence of efficacy or safety, questions about product quality and overarching concerns regarding the constantly changing regulatory concerns. This seminar will tackle some of the major issues regarding the use of these products in animals, with an enhanced focus on cannabidiol.

Dr. Dawn Boothe, Director of Clinical Pharmacology at Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine, is studying cannabidiol as a treatment for epilepsy in dogs and is also developing an assay to measure cannabinoid toxicity and efficacy. Dr. Boothe joined the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2003. She received her D.V.M. degree (1980) and M.S. degree in Physiology (1986) from Texas A&M University. Dr. Boothe completed her Ph.D. in 1989 in Physiology (Clinical Pharmacology) at TAMU. Dr. Boothe is a Diplomate ACVIM and ACVCP.

Legal Implications for Veterinarians of Discussing Cannabinoid Use in Pets with Clients

Currently, practitioners are prohibited from discussing cannabinoid use in pets. However, many pet owners are using these products with no knowledge of effectiveness or safety. Betsy Choder, Esq. will discuss current legal restrictions and help veterinarians determine the best course of action for client education.
